Lady Gaga reveals why she almost quit making music

Amid a late talk at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, Gaga clarified that she considered stopping music back “two or three years prior” in light of the fact that she felt her imagination was being traded off.

These days, being a pop star is far beyond simply making music — it’s about offering it, keeping up an online vicinity, being the substance of brands and, as Gaga put it, being a “moneymaking machine” “I don’t like being used to make people money,” she said. “I feel sad when I am overworked and that I just become a moneymaking machine and that my passion and my creativity takes a backseat — that makes me unhappy.” Selling fragrances and taking constant, “shallow” selfies were also beginning to damage her integrity, Gaga said, so she decided to do something about it: she found the strength and courage to speak up about what she wants — and, more importantly, what she doesn’t want.
“So what did I do? I started to say no,” she explained. “I’m not doing that. I don’t want to do that. I’m not taking that picture. I’m not going to that event. I’m not standing by that because that’s not what I stand for, and slowly but surely I remembered who I am.” Taking control of her life, her image and her work allowed the “AHS: Hotel” star to sleep better at night, knowing she was the kind of artist who could be proud of herself. “And then you go home and you look in the mirror and you’re like, ‘Yes. I can go to bed with you…every night,’” she said. “’Cause that person? I know that person. That person has balls. That person has integrity. That person has an opinion. That person just doesn’t say yes.”
